DUI Videos Radio Frequency Interference

This is a collection of videos of experiments conducted relating to experimentaion with the reliability of evidentiary and other breath testing instruments including the Inoxilyzer 5000 and the Intoxilyzer 8000. The experiments below deal with RFI from walkie talkies and mobile phones in the same room as the evidentiary breath instrument. Mobile phones should not be used for voice or texting in the breath room. Sometimes the RFI effect happens without triggering the instrument's RFI detection system. Sometimes phantom alcohol becomes analyzed alcohol. Sometimes the result is an instrument crash. Sometimes the effect is an exaggerated breath reading. Sometimes the effect is compromise of the ambient alcohol testing system, i.e. the air blanks (system blank test) are inaccurate (320.31(1)(a) defence). Sometimes the effect is to reset zero for instrument analysis purposes to a number less than zero or a number greater than true zero.  The latter phenomenon can cause unreliable system calibration checks (320.31(1)(a) defence). Sometimes a purge fail is triggered. On rare occasions, RFI can cause two totally erroneous but apparently normal subject tests (122/132 triggered by text messaging) within 20 mg/100mls of each other.
