Canada's "Young Offenders" Law is Tougher Than You Think

Search the Brampton Youth Court Research Database

This database was built by our office in the 1990's from non-identifying Brampton, Ontario Family Court Youth Court records for young persons ages 12 to 15. The records reflect the period April 1, 1984 to Mid-1994. Although the cases and sentences are old data they reflect sentencing practice over a large number of ordinary unreported cases. Please note that the [OPEN] and [SECURE] custody distinction is no longer applicable. OPEN custody reflected a group home custodial setting. SECURE reflected a jail setting. Sexual offences now tend to draw heavier sentences than the 1990's. Breach of Court order sentences now yield less custody under the YCJA than they did under the YOA in the late 1980's.
